Gift Card Scam Warning!

Public Advisory Regarding Gift Card Scams

The HRP/RCMP Integrated Financial Crime Unit is advising local businesses and citizens of an increase in gift card scams.

Over the last couple of months, investigators have noticed an increase in scams involving gift cards. Fraudsters are going to local businesses and purchasing numerous gift cards that need to be activated by store clerks. Once the cards are activated, the customer presents a fake or stolen credit card, usually without a chip, to pay for the gift cards. The customer is then prompted to swipe the card using the magnetic strip or enter the card numbers manually which may prompt the clerk to manually override the transaction. The store becomes aware of the fraudulent nature of the transaction several days later when informed by the credit card company. Because these transactions involve the store entering a manual override in the point of sale (POS) machine, the credit card companies may not cover the losses.

Investigators would like to remind businesses owners and clerks to be diligent about gift cards purchases. Specifically,

-          Be wary of a customer who is overly helpful or knowledgeable about manual override procedures involving POS transaction, especially when it involves a significant purchase.
-          Be diligent in confirming that a credit card is valid and train your staff appropriately.
-          When in doubt, contact the credit card issuers to confirm the validity of the card.
-          Ask for ID when in doubt and be mindful that fraudsters often carry counterfeit ID which may not reflect their real names.
-          If you do not feel confident about the validity of a credit card, refuse to process the transaction.
-          Be aware that you may be liable for losses incurred when a manual override is used.

The HRP/RCMP Financial Crime Unit reminds business owners of the importance being diligent when processing  transactions involving credit cards without chip technology. Contact police immediately if you become aware of a fraudulent credit card use.

Best Road Rage Ever?

Sea King Helicopter lands @ Larry Uteck??!

'Halifax police say a military chopper had to make an emergency landing in a vacant lot this afternoon.
DND contacted police advising them that a helicopter was experiencing difficulties and needed to make an emergency landing.

Const. Pierre Bourdages says it landed in a vacant gravel lot near a grocery store on Peakview Way off Larry Uteck.

He says military police and paramedics were called to the scene, but they don't believe anyone was hurt.'

Thanks to my buddy Terry Loye for the pics!

Elise Estrada Against Bullying

A buddy of mine, Adam H of 'XOXO Entertainment' is a Dad, and more importantly, a Dad against bullying. After hearing about Amanda Todd's tragic suicide, and then meeting her parents, both Adam & Elise wrote & produced THIS:

Nice work Adam & Elise!

EDIT: The song was just officially released ... This is the very touching release letter.

Attention Radio Friends;

Please excuse this non-typical informal release letter, but this is not a typical release.

The story of Amanda Todd has touched us all. For me personally I was at my son’s 6th Birthday Dinner when I heard the news. A local 15-year-old girl took her own life due to bullying. As I ingested the story, I watched my son celebrating the happiest day of his year.
When I got home from the Birthday dinner I laid in bed thinking, why would a beautiful little girl commit suicide? As I researched Amanda on various social media sites I became outraged. I was reading comments so hurtful and negative. Even after death, Amanda is still being bullied. What happened to our society? Isn’t Canada supposed to be a better place to raise children? I knew I needed to stand up for this little girl and I needed to do it now.
Amanda’s story engulfed me. I needed to do something… anything… I had a conversation with Elise Estrada. Elise immediately insisted that we use our voices and scream from the mountaintops that bullying needs to stop.
We can’t change the world, but we can help. We all have a voice and the ability to speak. Something needs to be done so our kids, and our grandkids, never have to live through what Amanda Todd had to live through. When we grew up, the bullying ended when we left the playground, but with today’s technology and cyber-bullying, these kids are tortured day and night.
Somehow, Amanda Todd’s family got word of the online efforts Elise and I were making and they sent us a note. In the note, Amanda’s family said “One of the happiest days of Amanda’s life was when she got to meet and take a picture with Elise Estrada”.
Chills instantly ran up my spine like I’ve never felt. Did we actually meet this poor girl? We felt strong a connection to her, but did we meet her? 15 minutes later, a photo of Amanda and Elise landed in my inbox.
I took that photo. I remember the day.
We met this girl. She sang for us, and she was good. So much potential… but we will never have a chance to know what could have been.
Elise and I wanted to do something for Amanda. Something special. Something to honor this poor kid, and maybe help the next kid who feels as alone as Amanda did.
The only thing we know how to do is make music… so we did. Elise and I wrote a song for Amanda. We had that picture in a frame watching us as we poured our hearts out to chords.
The song is called “Wonder Woman”. Once we recorded it, I sent a rough copy to Amanda’s family. They cried continuously as they listened on repeat. Touched by the sentiment, Amanda’s family asked us if it could be released to help raise awareness and help stop bullying. We then sent the song to other industry friends, and Grammy Winner Orlando Calzada immediately volunteered to take some time off from working with One Direction and Lady Gaga to mix engineer the song. Another American friend and superstar Mastering genius, Larry Lachmann also stepped up to the plate to honor this sweet Canadian girl. Since then, several pop superstars have taken photos holding signs reading “RIP Amanda Todd” and “Just Like Wonder Woman”. Amanda’s story has touched the globe.
Universal Music has also jumped on board and we are rushing to get the song available on iTunes, with proceeds going to an Anti-bullying Campaign in honor of Amanda Todd.
Many of your peers have heard the song and wish to support it immediately.
We are making noise for this innocent girl that didn’t deserve the heartache she was forced to endure.
It is our hope that you too will want to make noise to honor Amanda Todd, and to help spread the message that bullying is a serious issue. We need to make a change so no other kid has to hurt this way. We all have a voice and we need to stand up now.
If you don’t believe in this cause, I sincerely hope you pick another cause… any cause, because the world, and the community, needs us.
Thank you for reading this.
 -Adam H.

How Toddlers Are Just Like Katy Perry

NICKMOM.com TOTALLY nailed down this list ... Love them!

9. They both get frosting in the unlikeliest of places.

8. Toddlers have no idea what happened last Friday night.

7. I once heard a kid refer to the teddy bear she left in a supermarket as “The One That Got Away.”

6. Personal fragrance line? Check. But the smells of small children are more um, earthy.

5. They both have some major pipes, though it’s unlikely that my toddler’s rendition of “Itsy Bitsy Spider” will feature a guest spot by Snoop Dogg.

4. Colorful, outrageous, nonsensical clothing: Katy dresses pretty much exactly like my toddler when I tell her she can dress herself.

3. Katy divorced Russell Brand. My toddler threw away a steel wool pot scrubber.

2. Both prefer songs that kind of say the same things over and over and over and over.

1. You don’t want your teenage daughter acting like either of them anymore.

Working Mom? At Home Mom? How do YOU compare?

Workplace FUN!

HOW TO MAINTAIN A HEALTHY LEVEL OF INSANITY IN THE WORKPLACE

Page yourself over the intercom. Don't disguise your voice.

Find out where your boss shops and buy exactly the same outfits. Wear them one day after your boss does. This is especially effective if your boss is of a different gender than you.

Make up nicknames for all your coworkers and refer to them only by these names. "That's a good point, Sparky." "No, I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to disagree with you there, Cha-cha."

Send e-mail to the rest of the company telling them exactly what you're doing. For example: "If anyone needs me, I'll be in the bathroom."

Hi-Lite your shoes. Tell people you haven't lost them as much since you did this.

9 Reasons Kids Ruined Summer as You Once Knew it! haha.

9. The cooler once used to transport beer to the beach is now filled with Dora the Explorer popsicles.

8. Applying sunblock to another person: Used to be sexy, now there’s just a lot of complaining.
7. The whimsical jingle of Mister Softee means you’re pretty much out seven bucks.
6. Tanning still not considered a socially acceptable pastime for the under-12 set.
5. Flights to distant locales seem a lot less exotic when you’re changing diapers on them.
4. 60-75% chance someone is taking a bottle rocket to the face.
3. Camp is expensive, but so is having a nervous breakdown, and you have to choose one.
2. Amusement park log flume rides just haven’t been the same since childbirth.
1. Kids: The reason the tankini exists.
